Quick answer: if Cosequin doesn't seem to be working, the usual reasons are judging it before the 4 to 6 week starting phase is over, giving less than the label says for your dog's weight, cutting back to maintenance too soon, following the dosing table for a different Cosequin version, or simply that its formula doesn't cover enough. Cosequin DS has glucosamine and chondroitin, but no MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid, Boswellia or omega-3. If you've given it a fair trial at the right dose, we'd recommend switching to MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews: all six key joint actives in a soft chew, with a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Transparency note: this page is written by MedPaw, which makes a competing joint supplement. Cosequin's dosing details come from UK retailer listings and Nutramax's published labels, because the UK Cosequin website blocked our access. Everything was checked on 8 October 2026.
Why Cosequin might not be working
1. It's too soon to judge
Cosequin is built around a starting phase. VetUK's listing says "Cosequin should be used initially for a six week period" before you reduce to a maintenance dose (VetUK), and Nutramax's label calls it the "Initial 4-6 Weeks". Judging it after two or three weeks is too early. Give any joint supplement six to eight weeks at the right dose.
2. Your dog isn't getting the full dose
Cosequin DS's starting dose is 1 tablet a day under 10kg, 2 for 10 to 25kg, 3 for 25 to 50kg and 4 over 50kg (Direct-Vet). That's a lot of tablets for a big dog, and it's easy to round down. Weigh your dog rather than guessing, especially if they're near the top of a weight band.
3. You cut back too soon, or too far
After the starting phase, the dose drops, for example from 3 tablets to 1 or 2 for a 25 to 50kg dog, and Direct-Vet says it can go to every other day if your dog is stable. VetUK's listing says not to reduce the dose more than once a month, and that you can increase it again at any time if there's a flare-up. If your dog was doing well and then slipped after you cut back, the drop may have been too quick or too big.
4. You're following the wrong dosing table
Cosequin isn't one product. The UK vet version, Cosequin DS, is different from the US retail versions some UK sellers import, such as Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM & HA. Nutramax's Plus MSM tablet has different amounts and weight bands given in pounds, not kilograms. Check you're using the feeding guide for the exact tub in your cupboard.
5. Doses are being missed
A supplement only works if it's given every day. If your dog picks the tablet out of their food, or tablets get split and forgotten, missed days add up, especially at up to four tablets a day in the starting phase.
6. The formula is narrow
Cosequin DS has two of the six key joint actives, glucosamine and chondroitin, plus a little manganese. A 2022 review of 72 trials (Barbeau-Grégoire et al.) found omega-3 had the strongest evidence for arthritis pain in dogs, while glucosamine and chondroitin didn't relieve pain. Cosequin DS contains no omega-3 source. If it hasn't helped, a broader formula is a sensible next step. See what's in Cosequin for the full breakdown.
7. Your dog needs more than a supplement
Supplements support joint health; they don't treat arthritis or relieve serious pain. Limping, yelping, struggling to get up or a sudden change all need a vet check. Nutramax's own label says that if your pet has any condition that requires medical attention, you should always consult your vet.
How to tell if Cosequin is working
Changes from a joint supplement are gradual, so keep a simple note each week. After six to eight weeks at the right dose, look for:
- Getting up from lying down more easily, especially in the morning
- Less stiffness at the start of walks
- Walking further, or keeping up better on longer walks
- Less hesitation at stairs, the car or the sofa
- Less licking at a particular joint
- More interest in play
If you can't tick any of these after a fair trial, it's time to try something else and to see your vet.
Why Cosequin customers switch to MedPaw
Cosequin vs MedPaw on the reasons it might not be working
| The issue | Cosequin DS | MedPaw |
|---|---|---|
| Breadth of formula | Glucosamine, chondroitin, manganese | All six key joint actives: glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid and Boswellia |
| Getting the dose right | Several versions with different feeding guides; half tablets for small dogs on maintenance | One product; whole chews at every weight |
| Starting phase | 4 to 6 weeks, up to four tablets a day | Double for just the first three weeks |
| Giving it every day | Chewable tablet | Soft chicken and bacon flavour chew, given like a treat |
| If it doesn't work | No money-back guarantee we could find | 60 days from delivery, for any reason; nothing to send back |
Our recommendation: if you've given Cosequin six to eight weeks at the right dose and your dog isn't moving any better, switch to MedPaw. Swap rather than stack: stop Cosequin and start MedPaw the next day, doubling the usual number of chews for the first three weeks. If you're not happy, email bark@medpaw.co.uk within 60 days of delivery for a refund. Try MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews.
To be fair to Cosequin, it gives more glucosamine and chondroitin per day than MedPaw, and the few UK reviews we found were positive. Read our Cosequin reviews for the full picture, or our MedPaw vs Cosequin comparison.
If nothing has worked so far
If your dog is still stiff or sore after a fair trial of any supplement, see your vet. They may suggest pain relief, weight loss or an omega-3 fish oil at a proper dose, which has the strongest evidence for dogs with arthritis. How long does Cosequin take to work?
Cosequin's starting phase alone is 4 to 6 weeks, and VetUK's listing says to use it initially for six weeks before reducing. Give it six to eight weeks at the right dose before judging it.
Why is Cosequin not working for my dog?
The most common reasons are too short a trial, under-dosing for your dog's weight, cutting back to maintenance too soon, using the feeding guide for a different Cosequin version, missed doses, a formula that doesn't cover enough, or a condition that needs a vet.
Should I increase the Cosequin dose?
Don't go above the label's feeding guide without asking your vet. Check you're giving the right amount for your dog's current weight and for the exact version you have. VetUK's listing says the dose can go back up if there's a flare-up.
What should I try if Cosequin isn't working?
See your vet if your dog is in pain. If they're happy for you to try another supplement, we'd recommend MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews, which add MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid and Boswellia to glucosamine and chondroitin, with a 60-day money-back guarantee.
Can I give MedPaw and Cosequin together?
No. Both contain glucosamine and chondroitin, so swap rather than stack.
Can I switch from Cosequin to MedPaw straight away?
Yes. Stop Cosequin and start MedPaw the next day. There's no need for a gap, and you shouldn't give both. Check with your vet first if your dog takes any medication.
