Hi, I'm the MedPaw dose helper. Let's see how MedPaw compares for your dog.

First, roughly how big is your dog?

Cosequin for dogs in the UK

Quick answer: the main problem with Cosequin in the UK is that it's hard to judge and harder to buy: we could find only two UK retailer reviews for Cosequin DS, Protexin's own UK site now lists Dasuquin but not Cosequin for dogs, and big retailers such as zooplus and PDSA Pet Store don't stock it. Beyond that, it's a tablet, the UK vet version has just two of the six key joint actives (glucosamine and chondroitin), the loading phase runs 4 to 6 weeks at up to four tablets a day, and we couldn't find a money-back guarantee. With so few reviews, there's no meaningful UK rating to go on. If any of that sounds familiar, we'd recommend trying MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews instead: a soft chew dogs take like a treat, with all six key joint actives and the main amounts per chew on the label, a subscription you can pause or cancel any time, and a 60-day money-back guarantee with nothing to send back.

Transparency note: this page is written by MedPaw, which makes a competing joint supplement. Reviews are quoted word for word with links so you can check them. Ratings, labels and stockists were checked on 8 October 2026.

The most common Cosequin complaints and drawbacks

We looked for UK reviews of Cosequin for dogs at VetUK, Direct-Vet, zooplus, PDSA Pet Store, Pet Drugs Online and Protexin's own site. We found just two, both positive, and no negative reviews. Costco UK, Amazon UK, Viovet and Pets at Home wouldn't load for us, so we couldn't read reviews there. So rather than invent complaints, the table below sets out the drawbacks we could verify.

Cosequin for dogs: drawbacks we could verify (checked 8 October 2026)

    Drawback What we found
Almost no UK reviews No reviews on VetUK's Cosequin DS listing and two on Direct-Vet, from 2020 and 2022
Hard to buy Not listed on Protexin's UK site (only Dasuquin is); not stocked by zooplus or PDSA Pet Store
Narrow formula Cosequin DS has glucosamine, chondroitin and manganese; no MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid, Boswellia or omega-3
Tablet format A flavoured chewable tablet; half tablets for small dogs on maintenance
Long loading phase 4 to 6 weeks at a higher dose: up to four tablets a day for dogs over 50kg
Several versions The UK vet product differs from the US retail formulas some UK sellers import
No guarantee we could find Returns depend on each retailer

Missing from its distributor's UK site

Cosequin DS for dogs has been sold through UK vets for years, most recently under the Protexin Veterinary name. Today, Protexin's UK vet range lists Dasuquin for Dogs and Dasuquin for Cats as its only mobility products, and a search of its site for Cosequin finds only the horse powder. VetUK still lists Cosequin DS for Dogs (120 chewable tablets), but without a stock status. We can't tell you whether it has been discontinued; we can tell you it's harder to find than most joint supplements.

Two of the six key joint actives

Each Cosequin DS tablet contains 500mg glucosamine hydrochloride and 400mg chondroitin sulphate, plus a small amount of manganese. That's it for joint actives. There's no MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid or Boswellia, and no omega-3, which has the strongest evidence for arthritic dogs. Some UK sellers import US versions such as Cosequin Maximum Strength Plus MSM & HA, which have a different formula, so check the label of the tub you actually buy. See what's in Cosequin for the full breakdown.

Four to six weeks of extra tablets

VetUK's listing says "Cosequin should be used initially for a six week period" before you reduce to maintenance, and that the dose shouldn't be reduced more than once a month. The loading dose on Direct-Vet's pack guide is 1 tablet a day under 10kg, 2 for 10 to 25kg, 3 for 25 to 50kg and 4 over 50kg. That's a lot of tablets for a dog who doesn't like them.

    The guarantee catch

We couldn't find a money-back guarantee for Cosequin in the UK. It's sold through vets and retailers, so if it doesn't suit your dog, you're relying on each retailer's returns policy.

Why Cosequin customers switch to MedPaw

MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews differ from Cosequin on exactly the points above.

Cosequin vs MedPaw on the things that matter to owners

    The complaint Cosequin DS MedPaw
Knowing what's in it Glucosamine, chondroitin and manganese; no MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid or Boswellia All six key joint actives, with the main amounts per chew on the label: MSM 185mg, glucosamine 170mg, chondroitin 70mg, green-lipped mussel 70mg, Boswellia 30mg, plus hyaluronic acid
Dog won't take tablets Chewable tablet Soft chicken and bacon chew, given from your hand like a treat
Loading phase 4 to 6 weeks, up to four tablets a day Double for just the first three weeks
Getting your money back No guarantee we could find 60 days from delivery, for any reason; email us and keep the tub
Getting hold of it Not on Protexin's UK site; patchy retailer stock Order direct from medpaw.co.uk, with a subscription you can pause, change or cancel any time

Our recommendation: if you're struggling to find Cosequin, your dog fights you over tablets, or you want more than glucosamine and chondroitin in one daily chew, switch to MedPaw. Swap rather than stack: stop Cosequin and start MedPaw the next day. Give it six to eight weeks, and if you're not happy, email us within 60 days and we'll refund you. Try MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews.

    Cosequin's rating, in context

Cosequin doesn't have a meaningful UK rating. VetUK's Cosequin DS listing has no reviews, and the only two UK reviews we could read were on Direct-Vet: "Superb glucosamine product for our Chow Chow" (Mark H., May 2022) and "Fantastic for arthritis" (Dervil D., May 2020; star ratings aren't shown for individual reviews). The high star ratings you'll see on US sites are for US retail formulas, many of them different from the UK vet product, so they don't tell you much about the tub you'd buy here (checked 8 October 2026).

To be fair to Cosequin, it's a long-established brand, and each DS tablet gives more glucosamine and chondroitin than many rivals.

If nothing has worked so far

If your dog is still stiff or sore after a fair trial of any supplement, see your vet. They may suggest pain relief, weight loss or an omega-3 fish oil at a proper dose, which has the strongest evidence for dogs with arthritis. Read what you can safely give a dog for joint pain and the best fish oil for dogs' joints.

    Our verdict

Cosequin is a well-known name with almost no UK reviews, a narrow glucosamine and chondroitin formula, a long loading phase of tablets, no guarantee we could find and patchy availability now that its distributor's UK site lists only Dasuquin. If you want a chew with all six key joint actives that you can order direct, with a 60-day guarantee, MedPaw is the alternative we'd recommend. More on Cosequin: MedPaw vs Cosequin, what's in Cosequin, Cosequin side effects and why Cosequin might not be working.

What are the most common complaints about Cosequin?

We found no negative UK reviews of Cosequin for dogs, because there are hardly any UK reviews at all. The drawbacks we could verify are the lack of reviews, patchy UK availability, a formula with only glucosamine and chondroitin as joint actives, the tablet format, a 4 to 6 week loading phase and no money-back guarantee we could find.

    Is Cosequin any good?

There isn't enough UK review evidence to say. Cosequin DS gives a generous amount of glucosamine and chondroitin per tablet, but a 2022 review of 72 trials found those two didn't relieve arthritis pain in dogs. If you want a soft chew with all six key joint actives and a 60-day money-back guarantee, MedPaw is the alternative we'd recommend.

Is Cosequin still available in the UK?

It's harder to find. Protexin's UK site now lists Dasuquin but not Cosequin for dogs, and zooplus and PDSA Pet Store don't stock it. VetUK still lists Cosequin DS, and some sellers import US versions. We couldn't confirm whether the UK vet product has been discontinued.

Does Cosequin have a money-back guarantee?

We couldn't find one for UK buyers. Cosequin is sold through vets and retailers, so returns depend on where you bought it. MedPaw's guarantee lasts 60 days from delivery and you don't need to send anything back.

What's the best alternative to Cosequin?

If your dog won't take tablets, you can't get hold of Cosequin, or you want MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid and Boswellia alongside glucosamine and chondroitin, we'd recommend MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews. Swap rather than stack, and give it six to eight weeks.

Can I switch from Cosequin to MedPaw straight away?

Yes. Stop Cosequin and start MedPaw the next day. There's no need for a gap, and you shouldn't give both. Check with your vet first if your dog takes any medication.
