    Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive neurological disease that affects the spinal cord, causing slowly worsening weakness in the hind legs that eventually leads to paralysis. Unlike joint conditions, this disease affects the nervous system rather than the joints themselves, though the early signs can look remarkably similar to arthritis. Understanding the difference is crucial for getting your dog the right care at the right time.

    The condition shares similarities with some forms of human motor neurone disease and primarily affects middle-aged to older dogs, typically between 4-14 years of age.     Which Dogs Are at Risk

    Degenerative myelopathy has been identified in more than 24 different dog breeds, though some are considerably more susceptible than others. The condition was first recognised in German Shepherds, which is why it's sometimes called German Shepherd degenerative myelopathy, but we now know it affects many breeds.

    Breeds particularly at risk include: German Shepherds and their crosses, Siberian Huskies, Collies, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Boxers, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, both Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Standard and Miniature Poodles, Pugs, and Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

    The disease has a genetic component involving a mutation called SOD-1, which follows an autosomal recessive inheritance pattern. This means dogs can inherit one or two copies of the abnormal gene, increasing their risk of developing the condition. However, not all dogs carrying these genes will actually develop degenerative myelopathy, suggesting other genetic and environmental factors play a role.

    DNA testing is available through veterinary organisations to identify dogs carrying the SOD-1 mutation. This testing is particularly valuable for breeding decisions in at-risk breeds, helping responsible breeders make informed choices about their breeding programmes.

    DNA testing for the SOD-1 mutation is recommended for any at-risk breed displaying clinical signs consistent with degenerative myelopathy. However, a definitive diagnosis can only be made through histopathological examination of the spinal cord, which is only possible after death.

    This diagnostic challenge means that veterinarians often work with a presumptive diagnosis based on the combination of breed, clinical signs, and ruling out other treatable conditions. The response to treatment for other conditions can also help confirm the diagnosis.

    Managing Your Dog's Condition

    Currently, there is no cure or effective treatment to stop the progression of degenerative myelopathy. However, several management strategies can help maintain quality of life and may help slow the disease's progression.

    Exercise and Physical Activity

    Maintaining physical activity is crucial for dogs with degenerative myelopathy. Exercise helps preserve muscle mass, maintain mobility for as long as possible, and may help slow disease progression. Regular walking as tolerated by your dog is important, along with swimming, which provides excellent low-impact exercise.
