Step 1 of 8

Hi, I'm the MedPaw dose helper. Let's compare MedPaw and Dasuquin for your dog.

First, roughly how big is your dog?

In this article

Quick answer: Dasuquin is a chewable tablet built on three actives: glucosamine, chondroitin and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU). It gives more glucosamine and chondroitin per tablet, but it comes in two strengths, many doses need half tablets, the loading phase lasts 4 to 6 weeks, it has almost no UK reviews and we couldn't find a money-back guarantee. MedPaw is a soft chew with all six key joint actives, a three-week loading phase and a 60-day guarantee. For most dogs, we'd recommend MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews, especially if your dog is fussy about tablets or you want to try a supplement without risk.

Transparency note: this page is written by MedPaw, which makes a competing joint supplement. Dasuquin's details come from Protexin Veterinary's product page and UK retailer listings. We've said clearly where Dasuquin comes out ahead. Everything was checked on 8 October 2026.

    Where Dasuquin falls short

Dasuquin isn't a product with a pile of bad reviews. Its weak points are practical ones, and they add up.

    A narrow formula

Dasuquin has two of the six key joint actives, glucosamine and chondroitin, plus ASU. It has no MSM, green-lipped mussel or hyaluronic acid, and no source of omega-3, the nutrient with the strongest evidence for arthritic dogs. Some retailers list Boswellia as an additive, but Protexin's own page doesn't, and nobody publishes an amount. MedPaw has all six key actives, with the main amounts per chew on the label. See Dasuquin ingredients explained for the full breakdown.

Half tablets, two strengths and a long loading phase

You have to buy the right strength for your dog's weight, and many doses are half tablets: half a tablet for dogs under 4.5kg, and half a tablet at maintenance for dogs from 4.5 to 13.5kg. The loading dose runs for 4 to 6 weeks before you halve it. MedPaw is one product for every size, given as whole chews, with a three-week loading phase.

    Almost no UK reviews

We found six reviews at Viovet, most from 2018 to 2022, and one at PDSA Pet Store. Protexin has no reviews on Trustpilot. They're positive, but seven reviews can't tell you how most dogs get on. Read the full picture in our Dasuquin reviews.

No money-back guarantee we could find

Dasuquin is sold through vets and vet pharmacies, so if it doesn't suit your dog, you're relying on each seller's returns policy. MedPaw gives you 60 days from delivery to judge it, for any reason, and you don't need to send anything back.

Why Dasuquin customers switch to MedPaw

Dasuquin vs MedPaw on the issues that matter day to day

    The issue Dasuquin MedPaw
Giving it every day Chewable tablet, often halved Soft chew given from your hand like a treat; whole chews only
Breadth of formula Glucosamine, chondroitin, ASU All six key joint actives, plus vitamins C and E and zinc
Time on the loading dose 4 to 6 weeks Three weeks
Trying it without risk No guarantee we could find 60-day money-back guarantee, nothing to send back
Buying it Vets and vet pharmacies; two strengths Order direct; pause, change or cancel any time

Our recommendation: if you're tired of splitting tablets, want a broader formula than glucosamine and chondroitin, or want a guarantee in case it doesn't suit your dog, choose MedPaw. Give it six to eight weeks, and if you're not happy, email bark@medpaw.co.uk within 60 days of delivery for a refund. Try MedPaw Hip & Joint Chews.

When Dasuquin might suit your dog instead

To be fair to Dasuquin, it can be the better choice in some cases:

    • You want the most glucosamine and chondroitin. At maintenance, a 30kg dog on one Large tablet gets 900mg glucosamine and 350mg chondroitin a day, against 340 to 510mg and 140 to 210mg from 2 to 3 MedPaw chews.
    • Your dog can't have shellfish. MedPaw contains green-lipped mussel, so it isn't suitable for dogs with a shellfish allergy. Protexin says Dasuquin's glucosamine comes from fermentation, and its ingredient list doesn't include fish or shellfish. It does contain poultry protein and soy, so check with your vet.
    • Your vet has recommended it and your dog is doing well. If it's working, there's no need to change.

    Switching from Dasuquin to MedPaw

Swap rather than stack. Stop Dasuquin and start MedPaw the next day, with no gap. Don't give both: they share glucosamine and chondroitin. A Viovet staff answer advises against giving Dasuquin with another joint supplement with similar ingredients, because "giving both will be an overdose of the ingredients within." Follow the feeding guide on the tub, doubling the usual number of chews for the first three weeks. If your dog takes any medication, check with your vet first.

If nothing has worked so far

If your dog is still stiff or sore after a fair trial of any supplement, see your vet. They may suggest pain relief, weight loss or an omega-3 fish oil at a proper dose, which has the strongest evidence for dogs with arthritis. Read what you can safely give a dog for joint pain and the best fish oil for dogs' joints.

    Is MedPaw better than Dasuquin?

For most dogs, we think so. MedPaw is a soft chew with all six key joint actives, whole chews at every weight, a three-week loading phase and a 60-day money-back guarantee. Dasuquin gives more glucosamine and chondroitin per tablet and adds ASU, but has only those two key actives, uses half tablets for many doses and has no guarantee we could find.

What's the main difference between MedPaw and Dasuquin?

The formula and the format. Dasuquin is a chewable tablet with glucosamine, chondroitin and ASU. MedPaw is a soft chew with glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, green-lipped mussel, hyaluronic acid and Boswellia, plus vitamins C and E and zinc.

Does Dasuquin have a money-back guarantee?

We couldn't find one. Dasuquin is sold through vets and vet pharmacies, so returns depend on where you bought it. MedPaw has a 60-day money-back guarantee from delivery, for any reason, with nothing to send back.

Can I give MedPaw and Dasuquin together?

We don't recommend it. Both contain glucosamine and chondroitin, so swap rather than stack. Stop Dasuquin and start MedPaw the next day.

Is MedPaw suitable if my dog has a shellfish allergy?

No. MedPaw contains green-lipped mussel, a mollusc, and gluten from brewer's yeast. If your dog has a shellfish or gluten allergy, speak to your vet about which supplement to use.

Can I switch from Dasuquin to MedPaw straight away?

Yes. Stop Dasuquin and start MedPaw the next day. There's no need for a gap, and you shouldn't give both. Check with your vet first if your dog takes any medication.
