Quick answer: if your dog takes tablets, you'll usually get more active ingredient for your money than with chews. The strongest-labelled joint tablets sold in the UK are Seraquin (500mg glucosamine and 380mg chondroitin per 2g tablet), Nutraquin (505mg glucosamine and 400mg chondroitin per capsule) and YuMOVE (250mg glucosamine plus 150mg green-lipped mussel and hoki per tablet). Antinol is a small omega-3 capsule rather than a glucosamine product. Budget options like Vetzyme and Beaphar cost a few pounds a month but publish less detail.
Transparency note: MedPaw makes a joint chew, not a tablet, so we don't sell anything on this list. Details were checked against manufacturer and retailer listings in October 2026; formulas and prices change, so always check the pack.

The tablets, reviewed
Seraquin 2g
Boehringer Ingelheim's chewable tablet has the highest glucosamine and chondroitin per tablet among the mainstream vet brands, and it's one of the cheapest per month for medium and large dogs (around £16 a month for a 25kg dog). It also contains turmeric extract. There's an 800mg tablet for small dogs and cats.
Best for: owners who want glucosamine and chondroitin at meaningful levels without paying a premium. Watch out for: hydrolysed chicken protein, so it's not for chicken-allergic dogs. See YuMOVE vs Seraquin.
Nutraquin
Nutravet's sprinkle capsule (formerly Nutraquin+) can be swallowed or opened over food, which helps with dogs who refuse tablets. Its published figures are the strongest here per capsule: glucosamine HCl 505mg, chondroitin 400mg and Boswellia 75mg. Stock can be patchy on Nutravet's own site, so you may need a vet or online pharmacy.
Best for: high glucosamine and chondroitin in a format you can sprinkle. Watch out for: squid and crustacean ingredients. See YuMOVE vs Nutraquin.
YuMOVE Joint Support for Adult Dogs
The UK's best-selling joint tablet. Less glucosamine per tablet than Seraquin or Nutraquin and no chondroitin, but it adds green-lipped mussel and hoki (ActivEase). Price per tablet halves if you buy the 300 pack, making it good value at around £18 a month for a 25kg dog, or less on subscription. PLUS Max Strength adds more ActivEase and a little fish oil.
Best for: owners who want a familiar, widely available brand. Watch out for: mussel and fish, and the double-dose first month. See how many YuMOVE tablets your dog needs and is YuMOVE worth it?
Synoquin
VetPlus's chewable tablets come in sizes matched to dog weight, combining glucosamine, chondroitin and krill oil. They're mostly sold through vets and Pets at Home. UK pack listings don't publish amounts per tablet, and the six-week loading phase is the most expensive here (around £68 for a 25kg dog).
Best for: owners who like size-matched dosing with a marine oil included. Watch out for: krill, a crustacean. See Synoquin alternatives.
Pooch & Mutt Joint Supplement
A mid-priced tablet with a sensible spread of ingredients, including hydrolysed collagen and MSM alongside glucosamine and chondroitin. Small and large tablet sizes are dosed simply by weight, and there's no loading phase. Retailer listings for the large pack don't quite add up, so check the count on the tub. Not to be confused with Pooch & Mutt Mobile Bones, which is a powder.
Best for: a no-fuss mid-range tablet. See Pooch & Mutt joint care reviewed.
Antinol Joint Care Pro
A small softgel capsule of PCSO-524 green-lipped mussel oil. It's a different approach from the glucosamine tablets above, and one of the more expensive (from about £43 for 60). Note that its omega-3 content per capsule is small compared with the doses used in fish oil research.
Best for: owners who want a tiny capsule and a mussel-oil approach. Watch out for: mussel and a beef gelatin shell. See is Antinol worth it?
Vetzyme High Strength Flexible Joint
A budget pharmacy and supermarket tablet from Bob Martin with glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin, MSM and a little omega-3. At around £5 a month for a 25kg dog, it's one of the cheapest options with published amounts. Doses are lower than the vet brands.
Best for: tight budgets. See Bob Martin joint supplements reviewed.
Beaphar Joint Tablets
Liver-flavoured chewable tablets with glucosamine, chondroitin and vitamin E. Cheap per month, but Beaphar doesn't publish the amount per tablet, and retailers give slightly different feeding guides. See Beaphar joint supplements reviewed.
How to choose a joint tablet
- Compare the daily dose for your dog's weight, not the amount per tablet. Seraquin's 1.5 tablets for a 30kg dog gives 750mg glucosamine; YuMOVE's 2 tablets gives 500mg.
- Factor in the loading phase. It can double your first month's cost. See joint supplement costs per month.
- Check allergens. Chicken (Seraquin), shellfish (YuMOVE, Antinol, Vetzyme) and krill or squid (Synoquin, Nutraquin) are common.
- Glucosamine HCl vs sulphate: both are used in dog supplements; HCl is more concentrated by weight. Don't use human glucosamine products, which may contain xylitol.
- Splitting tablets: many doses involve half tablets. Chewable tablets split more easily than hard ones; a pill cutter helps.
Tablets or chews?
Tablets usually give more active ingredient per pound and keep longer. Chews are easier to give every day. If you're constantly hiding tablets in cheese or finding them spat out behind the sofa, a chew is worth the extra cost. See our guide to the best joint chews for dogs and tablets vs chews.
What tablets can and can't do
Joint tablets are complementary feeds that support joint health; they aren't painkillers. A 2022 review of 72 trials found the strongest evidence for omega-3 fish oil in dogs with arthritis and didn't find a pain-relieving effect for glucosamine and chondroitin. If your dog is limping or sore, see your vet and read what you can safely give a dog for joint pain. For the full picture across formats, see the best joint supplements for dogs in the UK.
What are the best joint tablets for dogs in the UK?
Seraquin and Nutraquin publish the highest glucosamine and chondroitin per tablet or capsule. YuMOVE is the most widely available and good value in large packs. Vetzyme High Strength is a cheap option with published amounts. The best choice depends on your dog's weight, allergies and budget.
Are vet joint tablets better than supermarket ones?
Vet-channel brands like Seraquin, Nutraquin and Synoquin generally contain more glucosamine and chondroitin per daily dose than budget supermarket tablets. But several, including YuMOVE and Seraquin, are also sold in shops and online.
How many joint tablets should I give my dog?
Follow the feeding guide for your dog's weight. Most brands give one to four tablets a day, and many double the dose for the first four to six weeks.
Can I give my dog human joint tablets?
It's not recommended. Some human products contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs, and their doses aren't designed for dogs.
Which joint tablet is best for a dog with a chicken allergy?
Avoid Seraquin, which contains hydrolysed chicken protein. Check every label, as flavourings vary. Our guide to the best joint supplement for a dog with a chicken allergy covers options in more detail.
